The dithyrambic figures of the French CBD market
Before detailing the opinions of health professionals as well as consumer feedback on cannabidiol and other cannabinoids (mainly CBG and CBN), let's review the figures for the French CBD market. These are interesting indicators for surveying the opinion of the general public and drawing initial conclusions on this molecule, which was only made legal at the end of 2020 following the Kanavape affair.
According to data relayed by the Interprofession of hemp trades (Inter Chanvre), France has nearly 7 million regular or occasional consumers of CBD products. That's almost 12% of the population. To meet this massive demand which does not weaken, the offer is structured and professionals are diversifying their range of CBD products: flowers and leaves from different varieties of hemp plant (Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica in particular), full spectrum CBD oils (full spectrum), broad spectrum (broad spectrum), CBD isolate in drops or in topical application, products from organic cultures, etc.
Still according to figures from Inter Chanvre, the number of shops specializing in legal hemp products has increased from 400 in 2020 to more than 2,500 in 2022... a meteoric rise which testifies to the dynamism of the CBD sector . To say that cannabidiol has found a large audience in France is an understatement. This unprecedented enthusiasm on the part of consumers for CBD products testifies to a rather favorable opinion.
Why do the French have a rather favorable image of CBD?
As we will show you in the following, consumers perceive CBD as a natural alternative without side effects to sleeping pills and analgesics (especially opioids).
If you are an avid reader of our blog, you know that CBD and, more broadly, the cannabinoids extracted from the plant Cannabis L. Sativa (CBG and CBN), are the subject of of a certain enthusiasm on the part of the scientific community, and for good reason: the molecule shines with its soothing and relaxing benefits, its analgesic effects and its anti-inflammatory properties.
In sum, consumers who take CBD oil drops sublingually, luxuriate in legal hemp infusions, or suck on cannabinoid lozenges (CBG and CBN) want:
- Reduce their stress and improve their sleep without side effects;
- Relieve mild to moderate acute or chronic pain;
- Relieve muscle or joint stiffness (topical application of full or broad spectrum CBD oils);
- Enjoy the raw flavors and organic taste of hemp by seasoning their dishes with CBD oils.
Remember that CBD products authorized in France must display an almost zero THC level (less than 0.3%). In the eyes of the legislator, this is the guarantee of a cannabidiol product without psychotropic effects.
Of course, all the CBD oils offered in our online store comply with the regulations in force in France. You can therefore choose your CBD product from our stock with complete peace of mind.
CBD oil: the opinion of the World Health Organization (WHO)
Let's start this overview with the opinion of this supranational organization created by the UN in 1948. Known for its precautionary principle sometimes pushed to the extreme (and rightly so), the WHO has gradually revised its opinions on products containing cannabidiol and cannabinoids (including CBD oils). The changeover probably took place at the end of 2017:
- On December 14, 2017, the WHO officially recommended that CBD should no longer be classified internationally as a controlled substance. “Non-scheduling of a substance means that it is not under strict international control, including production and supply,” explains the WHO.
- On December 19, 2017, the WHO Expert Committee delivered its opinion in this press release. Here are some selected excerpts: "The WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence has concluded that pure cannabidiol (CBD) does not appear to have abuse potential or be harmful to health”.
Despite this "rather" favorable opinion, the WHO does not recommend the use of cannabidiol for medical purposes, even if the committee of experts qualifies this position: "The first data from studies carried out in humans and animals show that the use of CBD could have therapeutic virtues for seizures due to epilepsy and associated pathologies”. And to continue: "Some people use cannabidiol (CBD) to relieve spasms during epileptic seizures […] This means that CBD could be used for medical purposes, but other evidence remains needed".
In sum, the WHO recognizes that pure CBD does not present any potential for abuse or harmfulness to health, but reserves the right to recommend the molecule for therapeutic purposes pending further evidence. The WHO recognizes that CBD has a potentially interesting effect in the treatment of neurological disorders, in particular epilepsy. Remember that this opinion was formulated at the end of 2017.
CBD oil: the opinion of Professor Orrin Devinsky
A few months after the WHO advice, Professor Orrin Devinsky (Director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center) and his team carried out two rigorous studies to assess the potential of CBD in the treatment of neuropathic disorders, including epilepsy.
The aim was also to determine the optimal dosage (concentration of CBD and THC), the amount of CBD oil, possible side effects, etc. Here is a summary of these two studies that evaluate the effects of CBD oil on seizure disorders.
Study #1: CBD oil and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
- Objective: to assess the potential benefits of CBD oil in the treatment of epileptic syndrome of Lennox – Gastaut;
- Method: randomized, controlled, double-blind study;
- Product: CBD oil manufactured under medical supervision;
- Concentration: 10%;
- Packaging: bottle;
- Participants: children with Lennox–Gastaut syndrome epilepsy;
- Results: Atonic seizure frequency was reduced by 42% in patients who consumed CBD oil (10% content);
- Side effects: "mild to moderate", mainly diarrhea, drowsiness and disruption of liver enzymes.
- Objective: to assess the potential benefits of CBD oil in the treatment of epileptic syndrome of Dravet;
- Method: randomized, controlled, double-blind study;
- Product: CBD oil manufactured under medical supervision;
- Concentration: 10%;
- Packaging: bottle;
- Participants: children with Dravet's syndrome epilepsy;
- Results: Seizure frequency decreased by 50% in 43% of patients using CBD oil (10% rate);
- Side effects: "mild to moderate", mainly diarrhea, drowsiness and disruption of liver enzymes.
Study #2: CBD oil and Dravet syndrome
Team opinion: CBD oil is not a "miracle drug", but it seems to have its place in the pharmacopoeia intended to improve the daily lives of epileptic patients. The 10% dosage seems to represent the best compromise between the benefits of cannabidiol oil and the side effects observed.
CBD: the opinion of the medical authorities in France
In France, the Ministry of Health and Solidarity launched a major experiment in March 2021 to assess the effects of cannabidiol (and THC) on a wide spectrum of pathologies. It was the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) that defined the indications to be tested in this experiment with medical hemp:
- Disorders associated with neuropathies, including drug-resistant epilepsies;
- Rebel Symptoms in Oncology;
- Pain associated with some forms of cancer;
- Pain associated with certain neurological disorders;
- Relieving pain in a palliative care setting.
“As a doctor, as a minister, I am proud that France can experiment with the use of cannabis for medical purposes and thus better support thousands of patients who face serious pathologies< /em>”, declared Olivier Véran, then Minister of Health and Solidarity.
The health authorities in France will formulate their opinion on the contribution of CBD oil, cannabinoids (CBG and CBN in particular) and THC in the pharmacopoeia after the end of the study, without current 2023.
CBD oil: the opinion of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
Unlike cannabis and THC, CBD oil is allowed in professional sports competition. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of doping products in January 2018. Warning: pure CBD is authorized, not cannabis, THC and other cannabinoids (CBG and CBN).
Athletes who are used to consuming full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD oil may test positive for doping tests because these CBD oils contain other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant (Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica). Traces of THC can also be a problem.
Professional athletes can therefore consume CBD oils, provided they are pure. Full and broad spectrum oils are excluded. Now let's see what they think of CBD oil with this review compilation:
- The opinion of Megan Rapinoe, living legend of women's football, Olympic champion and two-time world champion: "The CBD is now part of my all-natural recovery method. I use the product throughout the day to relieve pain and inflammation, stabilize my mood and improve my sleep. Instead of taking Advil or other pain meds, I almost exclusively replaced them with CBD products." Find Megan Rapinoe's review in full at this article on Forbes.com.
- UFC Champion Nat Diaz explains, “CBD helps me recover from training and limits the 'muscle and joint inflammation'.
- John Isner, American tennis player (17th in the ATP ranking), has publicly stated that he uses CBD (oils and capsules) to relieve pain and inflammation, improve sleep, reduce stress and promote muscle recovery. "I'm excited to help athletes improve their performance with CBD". Find the opinion of the tennis player in its entirety in this interview conducted by tennis.com.
