HHC 9R c'est quoi

HHC 9R: yet another problematic HHC derivative

The dance of molecules derived from hexahydrocannabinol, or HHC, continues, this time with a mysterious isomer: HHC 9R. In our series dedicated to new cannabinoids, we've chosen to talk to you about this substance, which seems to be catching on with some unwary consumers. Let's set the record straight!

What is HHC 9R?

It is quite simply a umpteenth derivative of HHC, or hexahydrocannabinol, a compound close to THC, the main psychotropic molecule of Cannabis L. Sativa and Indica.

Concretely, HHC 9R is an isomer of HHC which presents a somewhat particular spatial configuration: the bonds attached to the 9e carbon atom are oriented in an “R” around a chiral center. The "R" refers to the Latin "Rectus", meaning "Right", in reference to the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog rule of priority. So here it is for chemistry enthusiasts.

To put it simply, HHC 9R is very similar to HHC, which itself is very close to THC. Like HHC, it is a synthetic molecule, which is therefore manufactured in the laboratory, to the extent that it is not found in nature.

Since the HHC 9R is very close to the HHC, there is nothing good that can come of it. Indeed, HHC and its derivatives were formally banned on June 12, 2023 by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM). If HHC 9R was not mentioned by name in the organization's press release, you do not need to have done Sciences Po to guess it.

The decision by French health authorities came several weeks after similar bans across Europe, notably in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark and Austria. It must be said that HHC, and therefore very probably HHC 9R, present SERIOUS health risks on two levels: the risk intrinsic to the molecule, and the risk of consuming an adulterated molecule in the absence of a regulated market. .

As we explained here, the HHC emerged a bit out of nowhere, since it only appeared on the American market at the very end of 2021, in the middle of Covid, before emerging on the Old Continent in May 2022. It was also discovered during a seizure of contraband by customs officers in the Netherlands.

In its press release, the ANSM explained that “ the ban decision was based on the work of the research centers evaluation and information on drug dependence and addictovigilance and which showed that the chemical structure of these products is close to that of delta 9 THC, classified as a narcotic".

HHC 9R: what are its effects on the body and mind?

According to the ANSM, HHC 9R could cause the following harmful effects:

  • The more or less pronounced alteration of cognitive functions;

  • Psychotic effects, including paranoia and hallucinations;

  • Increased risk of dependence;

  • Exacerbation of symptoms of existing mental disorders, for example anxiety and depression;

  • Impairment of motor coordination;

  • Respiratory problems similar to those caused by smoking when consumed by inhalation, for example chronic bronchitis;

  • An amotivational syndrome, with reduced engagement in daily activities;

  • Increased heart rate;

  • Reduction in sperm production in men, and disruption of the menstrual cycle in women.

Never forget that in hemp, there are three main families of molecules:

  • Healthy and useful cannabinoids such as CBD, CBN, CBC and CBG, which we offer you in our online store, in impeccable quality and perfect traceability;

  • Psychotropic cannabinoids such as THC and similar substances (including HHC);

  • Doubtful synthetic molecules, on which we do not really have reliable and verifiable information. You won't find them on 321CBD.
