Chia seeds, a little wonder of nature
Chia is a plant native to Mexico and Central America whose consumption dates back to the time of pre-Columbian civilizations, notably among the Aztecs who were particularly fond of this plant from the sage family . Some Mesoamerican civilizations even made it their staple food, particularly in central Mexico and Guatemala.
Known scientifically as Salvia hispanica, chia is especially popular for its seeds which have a simply remarkable nutritional profile. They are naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, proteins and antioxidants.
They are usually mixed into drinks, yogurts or incorporated into bread and cake recipes.
Sometimes medical, sometimes recreational, cannabis is divided
Cannabis, which we all know, is present in Europe in two varieties: Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis indica. It is used all over the world for recreational (most often illicit), therapeutic and industrial reasons.
The distinction between these uses arises from the chemical compounds present or dominant in the plant consumed, notably tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and non-psychotropic cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD).
THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. It is responsible for the euphoric or “high” effects associated with its recreational use.
Hemp: what's the difference with cannabis?
Hemp is a generic word that defines the L. Sativa variety of cannabis, mainly used for industrial, food and ecological purposes. Generally, the term refers to a cannabis plant or product with low THC content.
In France, hemp has two major industrial uses:
- The hemp fibers are extremely strong and can be used in the manufacture of textiles, ropes, building materials, paper, etc. Due to its rapid growth and low requirement for pesticides and fertilizers, hemp is generally classified as an ecological crop;
- The fibers and hemp (the heart of the stem) can betransformed into bioplastics or lightweight, biodegradable construction materials. They thus offer a sustainable alternative to synthetic and traditional materials.
CBD, the cannabinoid that does you good
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found naturally in the cannabis plant, particularly the Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica varieties. This molecule became legal in France and in all European Union countries in 2020 following the historic decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Devoid of any psychotropic effect, CBD has soothing, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Its consumption therefore helps fight against stress and anxiety, overcome insomnia, promote targeted anti-inflammatory action and fight against free radicals responsible for premature aging.
