Origins and extraction methods
As its name clearly suggests, hemp oil is produced by pressing the seeds of the hemp plant, most often of the Cannabis L. Sativa strain, which do not contain cannabidiol (CBD) or other cannabinoids. The seeds, rich in fatty acids and nutrients, are pressed to obtain a clear, greenish oil, mainly used in food and cosmetic products.
Conversely, CBD oil is extracted primarily from the leaves, flowers and stems of CBD-rich cannabis varieties, including Cannabis L. Sativa or Indica.
This extraction often uses more advanced methods like supercritical CO2 extraction, which isolates a wide range of good cannabinoids and terpenes while removing unwanted substances like THC. Objective: obtain an oil full of CBD.
Hemp oil vs. CBD oil: a difference in chemical composition
Since hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of Cannabis L. Sativa, it contains almost no CBD, since cannabidiol is not found in this part of the plant (present rather in the aerial parts) It is, however, very rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably omega-3 and omega-6, and in antioxidants, which gives it appreciated nutritional qualities and virtues for cardiovascular health and skin.
On the other hand, CBD oil is extracted from the flowering, leafy and stem parts of hemp, where CBD is abundant, even very abundant. This extraction is carried out using methods that make it possible to preserve a broad spectrum of cannabinoids, among which CBD predominates, while eliminating impurities and retaining traces of other compounds such as THC, without exceeding the maximum level authorized by the law (less than 0.3% in France).
Hemp oil vs. CBD oil: a difference in uses
Even though they come from the same plant, hemp oil and CBD oil have different applications.
Hemp oil is mainly valued for its nutritional qualities. Its richness in essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6, makes it a popular ingredient in food and cosmetics. Used in salads, smoothies, or as a food supplement, it is also appreciated for its moisturizing and regenerating properties in products for skin and hair.
CBD oil is rather sought after for its physiological virtues. The molecule interacts with the endocannabinoid system, involved in the regulation of important functions such as sleep, the sensation of pain, the inflammatory response and even mood.
Thus, CBD oil is often integrated into a wellness routine to reduce stress, neutralize chronic pain, modulate the inflammatory response and improve the quality (and quantity) sleep.
