What is HHCPO?
The Hexahydrocannabiphorol Acetate, more commonly known by the abbreviation HHCPO, is a synthetic cannabinoid, that is to say manufactured in the laboratory, from cannabidiol (CBD) which, , is a natural cannabinoid that is extracted directly from the hemp plant, particularly Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica varieties.
HHCPO is a derivative of HHCP, which itself comes from a series of transformations of HHC, a molecule formally banned in France since June 2023. Let's zoom in on the HHCPO synthesis process for a moment:
- Hydrogenation of CBD: the first step consists of transforming the CBD into HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol) by a hydrogenation process. This fundamental transformation establishes the foundations necessary for subsequent chemical modifications;
- Conversion to HHCP: Next, HHC is transformed into HHCP (Hexahydrocannabiphorol) by the addition of a phenyl functional group. This step modifies the compound to allow it to interact more effectively with the nervous system and endocannabinoid system, with calming and pain-relieving effects;
- Acetylation to HHCPO: the last step consists of acetylation of HHCP with an acetyl group. This final structural modification allows the creation of the HHCPO.
What are the effects of HHCPO?
According to initial studies, HHCPO has an affinity with the endocannabinoid system 50% greater than that of HHC. The effects that we will discuss in this part are “suspected”, and not proven by science. We base ourselves here mainly on the literature devoted to HHC and the feedback from certain American consumers.
Observed benefits
Like HHC and, more broadly, all the cannabinoids of the hemp plant, HHCPO induces a relatively intense feeling of relaxation. This calming effect helps reduce stress and anxiety. We also observe a more marked pain-relieving effect than with CBD... but these virtues come at a price: HHCPO induces a state of euphoria typical of psychotropic substances.
Potential side effects
Like HHC and THC, HHCPO is one of the psychotropic molecules. It impairs cognitive functions, induces a euphoric state and causes dependence in the user. Typical side effects of cannabinoids will also be seen, namely dry mouth, red eyes and daytime sleepiness.
CBD: is HHCPO legal in France?
Legally, and at the time of writing these lines, the HHCPO is legal in France. On the other hand, at 321CBD, we predict a ban in the near future, in particular due to the molecular proximity of HHCP with HHC and HHCP, two cannabinoids which were banned by the Ministry of Health in June 2023.
Overall, we can say that HHCPO is in a gray area, which is why 321CBD has decided not to market products containing this questionable substance.
