CBD and animals: what is the point, concretely?
Just like humans, many animals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that regulates essential physiological functions like memory, appetite and mood. We are talking in particular about mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and certain invertebrates.
CBD and other cannabinoids from the hemp plant, including Cannabis Indica and Cannabis L. Sativa strains, interact with the ECS to improve your faithful companion's quality of life on several levels:
- Pain relief: CBD is an excellent analgesic that soothes bone, joint or muscle pain, with relief lasting at least several hours, without the side effects associated with opioid medications . Please note: only a veterinarian can make this decision;
- Reduction of stress and anxiety: like all molecules of the hemp plant, CBD soothes and relaxes. It brings animals a little peace of mind, especially if they have to deal with a certain amount of stress (moving, traveling, etc.);
- Improvement of the sleep cycle : through its soothing and relaxing action, CBD promotes healthy and restorative sleep for the animal;
CBD: which products to use for your animals?
Animals can benefit from CBD via different formulations, but oils and capsules remain the most suitable packaging:
- CBD oils for animals allow relatively rapid absorption when administered under the tongue, but this method is complicated in animals. Alternative: oral ingestion, placing the pipette behind the canines, in the space between the teeth and the cheek;
- Tablets and capsules CBD: this format provides a precise dose of CBD, but again, it can be complicated to make it swallow to a cat, an animal generally uncooperative. You can mix them with kibble or treats.
Obviously, CBD products must be strictly reserved for animal use and with a THC level of less than 0.3% to avoid possible psychoactive effects and remain legal.
CBD for animals: what dosage to follow?
CBD dosage for pets depends on weight and size:
- Dogs: a dog weighing less than 10 kilos can receive between 4 to 6 drops of 1% CBD oil per day. For those weighing between 10 and 25 kilos, 8 to 12 drops are recommended, and for large dogs over 25 kilos, up to 15 drops per day are recommended;
- Cats: an average-sized cat can generally receive between 1 and 2 mg of CBD per day, with adjustments based on observation of the effects obtained;
- Horses : for a horse of around 500 kg, you can administer up to 250 mg of CBD per day. Between two doses, it takes between 6 to 8 hours.
