Tai Chi, an “internal” martial art
A martial art that comes to us from ancient China, Tai Chi is a form of mediation in movement. It falls into the category of internal martial arts, or internal fist arts (neijia quan), which therefore focus on the mental, spiritual and energetic aspects (in the sense of traditional Chinese medicine). It is therefore opposed to external, or “hard” martial arts, such as Tang Lang, Hung Gar or Shaolin Quan.
Practiced for centuries, Tai Chi is characterized by slow, fluid and precise movements, executed with great concentration. This discipline emphasizes relaxation, deep breathing and the development of gentle strength, rather than raw muscular power.
Tai Chi practitioners seek to cultivate “Qi” or vital energy, following the principles of balance and harmony of Yin and Yang, at the heart of the philosophy Taoist. By aligning the body, mind and energy, Tai Chi would promote better circulation of energy in the body (if we believe in the theory of qi) and thus improve the well-being and longevity.
Tai Chi practitioners report several benefits: improved flexibility, strengthening of muscles, better management of balance and coordination and increased ability to concentrate.
This practice is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
CBD and Tai Chi: what is the connection?
The contribution of CBD to the daily practice of Tai Chi can be considered from several angles, especially when we consider its effect on well-being and stress management.
Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is a natural compound found in the hemp plant, notably the Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica strains. It is this second strain that interests us, because its CBD is soothing and calming, as opposed to the cannabinoids of the Sativa strain which are more energizing.
CBD is also an excellent painkiller, a powerful anti-inflammatory and a good antioxidant. Unlike THC, which is found in recreational (and therefore illegal) cannabis, CBD does not produce psychotropic effects and does not alter cognitive functions.
When engaging in the graceful movements of Tai Chi, the goal is to achieve perfect harmony between body and mind. By acting on the nervous system, CBD promotes the achievement of this balance by neutralizing stress and anxiety and boosting the ability to concentrate.
The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are also interesting for practitioners. Even though it is based on slow and gentle movements, Tai Chi can sometimes use muscles and joints that we are not used to mobilizing, or exacerbate old pain. CBD will therefore limit post-exercise inflammation and calm pain that could hinder the regular practice of this Chinese martial art!
