CBD and athletes: a matter of course!

On January 1, 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) officially removed CBD from the list of doping products, provided it is in its pure state, without the presence of the psychotropic cannabis molecule (THC).

This decision is the fruit of a series of studies which have definitively demonstrated the absence of any doping effect and any risk of abuse or dependence, as well as the physiological benefits of CBD in combating muscular inflammation, pain and stress. Here's how it works...

CBD: what is the benefit for high-level athletes?

Many top athletes have integrated CBD into their dietary program, from American women's football legend Megan Rapinoe to legendary boxer Mike Tyson and American tennis player John Isner (23rd in the ATP rankings). It must be said that this natural cannabinoid extracted from the hemp plant, mainly Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica varieties, ticks all the right boxes for athletes.

#1 Reduction of Inflammation

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that promote muscle recovery after intense exercise. The molecule accelerates the muscle regeneration process and thus allows athletes to recover more quickly and reduce post-workout pain to be able to increase efforts and improve performance.

#2 Improved sleep

Cannabis is sedative, but CBD is calming. The nuance is significant. By interacting with receptors in the endocannabinoid system, CBD promotes restful sleep, even in athletes who suffer from insomnia and REM sleep disorders. Their body can then regenerate better and repair muscle fibers more quickly to improve preparation.

#3 Pain relief

CBD is also a powerful natural analgesic which preferentially targets muscle pain and joint stiffness which limits the athlete's mobility. It is therefore a great alternative to anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications which are accompanied by side effects, subject to the approval of a doctor.

#4 Reduction of muscle spasms

Muscle spasms, which can be caused by dehydration, sprains or nerve damage, are common among athletes. CBD exerts an antispasmodic action to accelerate recovery and promote performance.

Sport and CBD: instructions for use

Athletes who wish to integrate CBD into their program should start with a reduced dose to assess their body's reaction. Subsequently, they can organize themselves in three stages:

  1. Before sporting activity: take 2 to 3 mg of CBD approximately 30 minutes before starting exercise. This prior intake improves concentration and prepares the body for exercise by limiting physical and mental stress;
  2. After training: Consume a further dose of 2 to 3 mg at the end of training to accelerate muscle recovery, reduce inflammation and soothe possible post-exercise pain.
  3. Before bed: a final dose of 2 to 3 mg one hour before bed will promote restful sleep.

CBD and sport: oil, the preferred format

CBD oil is the best format for athletes. It will be preferentially consumed:

  • Sublingually: place a few drops under the tongue for 60 seconds for rapid absorption and almost immediate effects;
  • Topical use: apply the oil directly to sore muscles or stiff joints post-exercise for localized action.
