Legalization of cannabis: a preliminary resolution was presented
In Portugal, the ruling Socialist Party is moving towards the legalization of cannabis with the submission of a proposal to the Health Commission. Objective: Create a working group to study the non-medical use of cannabis and discuss the implications of legalizing the production, sale and consumption of cannabis.
This initiative was discussed during a conference scheduled at the Assembly of the Republic in September 2023, as announced by Eurico Brilhante Dias, member of the Socialist Party and strong supporter of the legalization of recreational cannabis .
The Cannabis Legalization Task Force
The working group formed by the Portuguese Socialist Party has the mission of conducting detailed studies and consulting experts from various sectors to better understand the implications of the legalization of cannabis in the country.
The group presented its findings at a conference at the end of 2023, and presented a proposed law for the legalization of cannabis. The group's work, enriched by contributions from experts, has “provided a solid basis to inform the parliamentary debate on this issue”, we can read in the press release.
Legalization of cannabis in Portugal: a political coalition is formed
To strengthen its bill on the legalization of cannabis, the Portuguese Socialist Party is relying on the support of other parliamentary groups such as the Left Bloc and the Liberal Initiative. The latter had already proposed similar bills during the previous legislature, which however had not been adopted by the Health Commission.
The Liberal Initiative had notably suggested allowing the sale of cannabis online and in stores, while excluding certain sensitive places such as educational establishments, health centers, sports facilities, children's play areas and gas stations.
