CBD: a promising solution against anxiety and depression
According to Santé Publique France, more than one in five young French people (18 to 24 years old) are affected by depression. That’s 10% more in less than 4 years. The same report indicates that 9.5% of 17-year-old adolescents presented severe anxiety-depressive symptoms, compared to 4.5% in 2017.
Faced with the side effects and tolerance problems posed by anxiolytics, anti-depressants and other medications used against mood disorders, the scientific community is experimenting with new ways of caring for patients who suffer from this type of pathology.
CBD is one of the most promising avenues:
- 2010: a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology demonstrated that CBD helped reduce symptoms of social anxiety. A year later, another report published in the same journal concluded that CBD effectively reduced the phenomena of social phobia in people who fear speaking in public;
- 2014 : research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation demonstrated that CBD oil had anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects;
- 2015 : an analysis published in Neurotherapeutics concluded that CBD oil is a promising treatment for several forms of anxiety, including social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder ;
- 2016: a case study published in the Permanente Journal explored the effect of CBD on symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety-induced sleep disorders in children. Result: CBD reduces anxiety and promotes better quality sleep.
CBD to reduce the severity of anxiety attacks
A study pilot conducted by the Australian Orygen Medical Center showed that CBD could relieve anxiety attacks in patients for whom conventional treatments had failed.
The group of volunteers included 31 adolescents and young adults, aged 12 to 25, suffering from anxiety disorders and not treated by cognitive-behavioral therapies. For 12 weeks, participants received a varying dose of CBD, starting with one 200 mg capsule per day in the first week, then increasing to 400 mg per day in subsequent weeks.
At the end of treatment, participants reported a 42.6% reduction in the severity of their anxiety attacks, without side effects.
Professor Patrick McGorry, Executive Director of Orygen, explains: “We see that more and more young adults are experiencing anxiety. It is a form of mental illness among young people and we urgently need therapeutic innovation. CBD is a promising option that appears safe and effective..
