L'ANSM interdit une nouvelle vague de cannabinoïdes de synthèse

For just under a year now, the Agence nationale de la sécurité des médicaments et des produits de santé (ANSM) has been stepping up a gear when it comes to the dubious cannabinoids invading the French market.

In a detailed press release published on May 24, 2024, the agency announced the addition of several synthetic cannabinoids to its list of substances considered to be narcotics. Here's an update...

H4-CBD, THCP and THCA are among the substances concerned.
Clearly, the ANSM is determined to prevent synthetic cannabinoids from flooding France.

After banning HHC and its derivatives in June 2023, the watchdog for dietary supplements and health products is this time tackling a series of molecules made in laboratories from natural cannabinoids extracted from the hemp plant, notably the Cannabis L. Sativa and Cannabis Indica strains.

“We have taken the decision to classify new cannabinoids on the list of narcotics because of the risks and possible dependence associated with their use”, explains the ANSM in a press release published on its website.

The list includes H4-CBD, H2-CBD and, more broadly, all synthetic cannabinoids containing a benzo[c]chromene chemical nucleus, such as HHCPO, THCP and THCA.

The production, sale and consumption of these cannabinoids will become prohibited under the law against drug trafficking from June 3, 2024.

Why is ANSM specifically targeting cannabinoids with a benzo[c]chromene core?
To understand this, we need to go back to the molecular structure of benzo[c]chromene. This core embodies a three-ring system comprising a benzene ring (a six-carbon aromatic ring) fused with an oxygen ring. This bicyclic system is further fused with another benzene ring to form a third ring.

This structure can be found in a number of natural and synthetic compounds with strong pharmacological and psychoactive activities. The presence of the benzo[c]chromene ring in synthetic cannabinoids is problematic for three reasons:

High psychoactive potential: the benzo[c]chromene system will increase the cannabinoid's affinity for the “CB 1” cannabinoid receptors present in our brains, which will inevitably increase their psychoactive potential. Clearly, the presence of this nucleus increases the psychoactive and euphoric effects of the cannabinoid, either in intensity or duration (or both);
Risks to consumer health: substances with a benzo[c]chromene nucleus are quite unpredictable, as this molecular structure is not yet fully understood by scientists. Its effects on human health are therefore poorly understood. There is therefore a high risk of potentially serious side effects, as well as toxicity and dependence;
Difficulty of regulation and detection: synthetic cannabinoids with this type of core have a fairly flexible structure and can therefore be continuously modified to circumvent regulations. Detection, control and regulation by health authorities are therefore extremely complicated.
ANSM refers to recurrent reports of cannabinoids from consumers
The ANSM's decision to add these synthetic cannabinoids to the list of narcotics was also prompted by worrying alerts from centers for assessment and information on pharmacodependence-addictovigilance (CEIP-A).

The latter report numerous cases where the consumption of these substances has led to immediate serious effects, including vomiting, loss of consciousness, convulsions, high blood pressure, tachycardia, chest pain that may suggest a heart attack or even coma. “Cases of renal failure have been reported”, the press release states.

The ANSM also mentions relatively serious psychological symptoms such as chronic stress, anxiety attacks, panic attacks and paranoia.

“These substances mimic the effects of THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, with effects that are severe and more intense than those experienced with cannabis consumption. What's more, these products are likely to lead to dependence", says ANSM.

ANSM advises consumers addicted to these substances
If you experience serious side effects following consumption of these cannabinoids, it is imperative that you act quickly by contacting the emergency services (Samu, fire department or emergency services).

For those who have difficulty managing their consumption, or who wish to stop it, it is advisable to consult a doctor or to get in touch with a structure specializing in the treatment of addictions.

Young people under the age of 25 can take advantage of a free, confidential service offered by “consultations jeunes consommateurs”, which provides reception, listening, advice and referral to appropriate care.

For more information, or to find a center near you, visit drogues-info-service.fr. You can also report any serious cases of abuse, dependence or misuse of these substances on the signalement.social-sante.gouv.fr website.

Finally, you can contact your local drug dependence-addictovigilance assessment and information center (CEIP-A) directly for help or further information.

At 321CBD, we advocate the banning of dubious cannabinoids
At 321CBD, our commitment to the quality and safety of the products we offer is unwavering.

We are an online store that sells only natural cannabinoids, authorized by current French and European legislation.

CBD, CBN, CBC and CBG have been widely studied for decades, and research has confirmed their soothing effects, analgesic properties and anti-inflammatory virtues. They have also demonstrated the absence of any psychotropic or euphoric effects, any alteration in the cognitive abilities of consumers, and any risk of addiction (see the official opinion of the World Health Organization).

For several years now, we have been advocating a fundamental change in the legislative paradigm concerning new cannabinoids in France. We believe that all new molecules should be banned by default, until rigorous scientific studies prove their safety.

That's why we've always taken great care not to offer any dubious cannabinoids in our product range. For example, those banned in June 2023 and those recently banned by the ANSM have never been offered in our online store, unlike some of our competitors.

Finally, we have taken the decision not to market synthetic cannabinoids which are still legal today, but whose ban by the ANSM could be imminent. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our customers.
